Philippine Azkals wins the second leg of 2014 World Cup Wualifying match against Sri Lanka. It was a far cry from the erratic performance of Philippine side in the 1-1 draw in Sri Lanka last June 29.
“The Philippines is a much, much better team today,” said Sri Lanka coach Jang Jung on the Azkals.
The Azkals will meet Asian powerhouse Kuwait in another home-and-away match on July 23 and 28.
“We can’t play that much offensively against Kuwait (next round), otherwise we’ll get hammered like we’ve never seen before,” said head coach Hans Michael Weiss.
The Azkals, which had a successful run in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup quarterfinals, will go through several rounds of qualifiers in a bid to make it to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The second leg, scheduled took place at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila and aired live by Studio 23 on July 3, 2011 at 2 p.m. This will be followed by a replay at 9 p.m. on Balls TV.
