Cardinal Tagle Message On election of His Holiness Pope Francis

Message of Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle On election of His Holiness Pope Francis.

"Your love sustained us. When I approached Pope Francis to assure him of the closeness and collaboration of the Filipinos, he said, "I have high hopes for the Philippines. May your faith prosper, as well as your devotion to Our Lady and mission to the poor."

The first Jesuit to become pontiff, Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen pope Thursday morning (Manila time), succeeding Pope Benedict XVI (Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) who stepped down last month due to health reasons.

In these modern times, Pope Francis' simple ways and lifestyle is something to look up to. Francis, 76, is the 266th pontiff in the Church's 2,000-year history to lead the 1.2 billion Roman Catholics worldwide. He is the oldest of the possible candidates and was not among the small group of frontrunners predicted before the conclave.
