Bosnia-Herzegovina was banned from international soccer play by FIFA and UEFA this week for splitting its federation along ethnic lines.
They also faced possible expulsion from the 2012 European Championship.
Bosnia's soccer federation has so far refused requests to replace a three-member presidency with a single leader. The federation's presidency is currently shared by a Bosnian, a Croat and a Serb.
"FIFA and UEFA deeply regret that this decision had to be taken," the governing bodies said in a joint statement.
FIFA and UEFA said they would soon meet "to discuss the next steps required to try to bring (Bosnia) back into the football family as soon as possible."
FIFA and UEFA had tolerated the Bosnian situation for years, giving the region a certain degree of special consideration because of its grim ethnic problems after the 1992-95 war. But last October FIFA and UEFA gave Bosnia a March deadline to modernize its statutes or face suspension, and that deadline has now passed. Read more...
