Earthquake 5.9 Magnitude shakes Virginia

A 5.9 earthquake occurred in the US state of Virginia on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Dubbed as the second most powerful earthquake in Virginia's recorded history, CNN reported officials prompted evacuations of office buildings and the closing of monuments in the nation's capital. No major injuries or damage were immediately reported.


The earthquake was felt in many major urban areas like Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York and even Boston. The White House and the Pentagon were evacuated, though neither the President nor Vice President are currently in Washington, D.C.
