Eid al-Adha 2011 on November 6, start on November 7 in North America

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah's (God's) command to sacrifice his son Ishmael. Muslims around the world observe this event.

According to ask.com, Eid Al-Adha will fall on or around November 6, 2011- Sunday. However, based on sightability in North America, in 2011 Eid al-Adha will start in North America a day later - on Monday, the 7th of November. Note that in the Muslim calander, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Adha on the sunset of Saturday, the 5th of November based on when.com.

Eid al-Adha is the latter of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims, whose basis comes from Sura 2 (Al-Baqara) Ayah 196 in the Qur'an.Like Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a Wajib prayer of two Raka'ah (units) followed by a sermon (khuá¹­bah).

The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months & 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan, i.e. Eid-ul-Fitr. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.


UPDATE: October 22, 2011
President Noynoy Aquino has signed Proclamation No. 276 making November 7, which falls on a Monday as regular holiday.
