Long Teng Cup: Azkals vs Taiwan ends with a 0-0 draw

The Philippine Azkals left the field at the Kaohsiung National Stadium in Taiwan with another draw against hosts Taiwan, 0-0 Sunday night.

In the match last year the smiling assassin Ian Araneta scored in injury time to earn the Philippines a 1-1 draw.

Taiwan, meanwhile, were twice denied by saves from Roland Müller in the first half and the offside flag the second. First diving to beat away Victor Chou’s effort when through on goal, Müller then made a better save in almost the exact same position moments later. Plying his trade with MSV Duisburg in the Bundesliga the Fil-German keeper conceded three on his debut Friday but saved all seven shots on target Sunday.

The Taiwan side got two yellow cards when captain Chen Yu-Lin lunged in with two feet against James Younghusband and Lo Chih-an slid in on James again late in the second half with studs showing on both occasions.

Meanwhile it was the other Younghusband who could have won the game for the Azkals. Played in by Jeff Christaens, Phil was forced a little wide and kicked the ball straight at the keeper. Taiwan had a chance in the second half when they had a goal disallowed for offside. Debutant Nickson Leonora was beaten on the edge of the area and the shot deflected into the path of the Taiwan striker whose calm finish and celebrations were cut short by the linesman’s flag.

With 60% of the possession Taiwan, made better use of the ball with fourteen shots in total. In contrast, the Azkals only had three out of 13 shots on target.

The second half largely petered out and the disallowed goal and Younghusband’s miss were the only real chances of the game. A second game in three days clearly took its toll on the players with both sides looking fatigued in the second half and so Taiwan looked to bring on fresh legs making five substitutions. Weiss, by contrast, only brought on Lexton Moy after Christaens replaced Caligdong and though he brought a composed passing game back to the side his time was too short to make any real impact. Mark Hartmann’s creativity and Misagh Bahadoran’s speed also offered viable options.

With two draws and two points the Philippines are in third place behind Taiwan and Hong Kong who are only separated by goal difference on four points each. Replicating their form in the Challenge Cup Qualifiers, with draws to hosts Burma and Palestine, the Philippines are expected to beat Macau but playing first the final game of the Long Teng Cup between Taiwan and Hong Kong will decide which of the top three nations will win the tournament.
