Al-Hijra on November 26, Holiday in U.A.E.

A  report on UAE-based news site Khaleej Times quoted Vice Consul Gerry Suliguin as saying Filipinos there should monitor the days when the Consulate will be closed.

Al-Hijra is celebrated on the first day of Muharram, the month in which Muhammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE (the Hijra).

There are relatively few rituals associated with Islamic New Year. There are no prescribed religious observances, according to the ReligionFacts.com website.

"Most Muslims regard the day as a time for reflection on the Hijira and on the year to come," the site said.
