New York Couture Fashion Week showcases Filipino designs

The New York Couture Fashion Week showcases Pinoy designs and Philippine Tourism.

The New York Couture Fashion Week event 2012 at the Waldorf Astoria featured the collections of two Filipino designers, Barge Ramos and San Francisco-based Joseph Domingo. The jewelry and accessories creations of Arnel Papa were likewise featured as an integral part of the Ramos collection for New York Couture Week.

Aptly titled “Island Treasures at the Waldorf” the show which took place at the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria on September 16 featured fresh and innovative collections from Ramos, a long-established designer of couture wear in the Philippines and up-and-coming designer Joseph Domingo.




The show was preceded by a performance of a Philippine tribal dance from the Cordillera region again showcasing our unique and diverse culture.

Before the Fashion Show, booths promoting various tourism destinations and products in two featured regions: the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and the Southern Tagalog Region including Puerto Princesa City were set up at the Jade Room of the Waldorf Astoria as part of efforts to promote greater awareness of the Philippines in the international market.

The exhibit and promotion efforts were coordinated by the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) through its offices in CAR, the Southern Tagalog Region, and Puerto Princesa City and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) through its office the CAR.

The exhibit and show was graced by the presence of CAR Governor Jocel Baac, Abra Governor Eustaquio Bersamin, and Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn.

A video presentation on the one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the Puerto Princesa Underground River was likewise presented by the Puerto Princesa delegation headed by Mayor Hagedorn.

Proceeds from the Island Treasures show, which was sponsored by the East Coast Charities Inc. (ECCI) headed by Filipino Community member and entrepreneur Elma Santander, are earmarked for Smokey Mountain education programs and the apostolic work of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel in New York.

A few days before the exhibit and show, Local Government, DOT and DTI delegations briefed members of the business sector and the Filipino-American Community at the Philippine Center on the latest region-based tourism and trade promotion efforts of the Government.

The Briefing was opened by Consul General Mario L. de Leon, Jr. who welcomed the delegations and noted that this was a rare opportunity for the business and Filipino community to interact with regional and local government officials. He noted that there are a number of developments which would help the overseas community appreciate the potential for tourism and trade in the Philippines.

CAR Governor Jocel Baac was likewise present to give an overview of the trade and tourism attractions in the CAR.

The DOT delegation was headed by Undersecretary Theresa Martinez while presentations were made by DTI Regional Director for CAR Myrna Pablo, DOT Regional Director for CAR Purificacion Molintas, DOT Southern Tagalong Regional Director Louella Jurilla, and Tourism Officer for Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Ms. Rebecca Labit.

During the lively open forum, the delegations fielded questions on tourism sites, tourism infrastructure, products and other attractions which visitors could experience in the Philippines.
