Cebu Pacific now flies to Iloilo

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) that Cebu Pacific’s inaugural flight to Iloilo left Hong Kong today at 2:20 a.m. from Hong Kong International Airport.

Fifty-seven passengers, led by Philippine Consul General to Hong Kong Noel Servigon, took the two-hour and 25 minute flight to Iloilo, considered to be the gateway to Western Visayas.

The passengers were primarily Filipino workers in Hong Kong as well as various leaders and members of the FIlipino Community whose hometown is Iloilo.

In his remarks, Consul General Servigon proudly welcomed the passengers taking the flight to Iloilo, his hometown. He thanked Cebu Pacific for pursuing the Hong Kong-Iloilo route, which is significant for three reasons, namely, to bring the Filipinos in Hong Kong closer to home, to attract more tourists to the Philippines, and to encourage economic activity between Hong Kong and the Philippines with Iloilo as a hub.

The inaugural flight is a milestone for Iloilo tourism and officials hope that this route will enhance the visitor arrivals from Hong Kong to the Philippines.

From January to September 2012, 88,393 visitors from Hong Kong traveled to the Philippines. This figure represents a 5.08% growth rate from the same period in 2011.

Hong Kong imported $22,610,024 worth of mangoes from the Philippines in 2011 and Consul General Servigon noted that mango producers in Western Visayas can boost the export numbers by taking advantage of the direct flight. Other products such as crab meat and raw cane sugar present many opportunities to boost trade.

The plane used for the inaugural flight was the same plane that flew in close to 100 passengers from Iloilo to Hong Kong, which arrived at 1:35 a.m. also on even date.

Consulate officials were on hand to welcome the passengers.
