The two lucky OFW-awardees at the yearly “Pamaskong Handog sa OFWs received their winnings from Secretary of Labor and Employment Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz.
At a brief ceremony at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Intramuros, Baldoz handed the cash and gift certificates to the OFWs who came with their relatives and friends. Present during the ceremony. Undersecretary of Labor and Employement Danilo P. Cruz, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Carmelita S. Dimzon, Deputy Administrator Josefino Torres, and representatives of institutional corporate partners attended the awards handover.
Dimzon said the two OFWs, Mary Grace Arcebuche and Romeo N. Ocampo,both working in Qatar, were visibly happy upon receiving their cash and gift prizes from Secretary Baldoz.
Arcebuche, a 40-year old single parent from Fairview, Quezon City, works as a beautician.
“I will use the prizes for the education of my four children,” Arcebuche told Secretary Baldoz after receiving her prizes.
On the other hand, Ocampo who comes from Angeles City, is a chassis welder. He said he would spend his prize for the medical treatment of his sick child.
Arcebuche and Ocampo regretted the missed opportunity to meet President Aquino last December during the “Presidential Salubong,” to shake his hand, and have their photographs taken with him.
They informed Secretary Baldoz that their arrival hour changed because their respective employers changed their flight schedules at the last minute due to airline overbooking and failed to notify the welfare officer in Doha.
Last 20 December, Virginia Tulagan Miranda, a household service worker in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, received her prizes from the President upon her arrival. Miranda, who hails from San Carlos, Pangasinan, has been working in Dubai for almost two years. She will use her prizes, she said, to buy a wheelchair for her sick mother and to renovate their “bahay kubo.” An OWWA team accompanied her home to be reunited with her family.
Each of thethree lucky OFW winners received prizes amounting to almost P300,000.
Baldoz thanked Banco de Oro, Land Bank of the Philippines, SM Supermalls, Inc., Duty Free Philippines, and DHL, Philippines for their continued support to the “Pamaskong Handog for OFWs” which is now running on its 19th year.
