DSWD ties up with Rags2Riches for training of NCR Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries

To provide sustainable source of income to selected beneficiaries of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in Caloocan, Tondo, and Quezon City, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) ties up with the Rags2Riches, Inc. (R2R) to train them on rug weaving and sewing.
The DSWD and Rags2Riches signed the memorandum of agreement for the pilot implementation of the project on January 28, which coincided with the kick-off of the weeklong celebration of DSWD’s 62nd Anniversary. The agreement will run for one year.
Dubbed as “Paghahabi Para sa Pantawid Pamilya project,” the pilot implementation focuses on enhancing the skills of some 25 Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries in weaving and sewing, and eventually employing them as suppliers of Rags2Riches merchandise.
“The DSWD is committed to help Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries become self-reliant by enhancing their skills in livelihood enterprises,” Secretary of Social Welfare and Development Corazon Juliano-Soliman said.
Under the project, participants will undergo a four-day training on weaving. Then, they will start receiving job orders from R2R and eventually, they will be tapped as regular suppliers of the company.
On the other hand, Secretary Soliman said that beneficiaries who have skills in sewing may be employed by R2R while the products that they created can be purchased by the sewing company and become part of their merchandise.
“This project is part of the DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) which ensures the sustainability of the beneficiaries’ income even after they graduate from the Pantawid Pamilya,” Secretary Soliman said.
The SLP is a community-based capacity building program that seeks to improve the program participants’ socio-economic status. It equips program participants to actively contribute to production and labor markets by looking at available resources and accessible markets. It relies on multi-stakeholder partnerships and participatory community planning, implementation and monitoring.
Secretary Soliman thanked R2R for their generous support in providing livelihood opportunities to Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries.
“Through the promising partnerships with the private sector, the DSWD sees the potential in creating a formidable alliance between the government and the private sector through more projects like this,” Secretary Soliman added.
