A burst of fireworks filled the night sky over Sochi on Friday as Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the Winter Olympics open. (Feb. 7)

The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event being held in Sochi, Russia.

Scheduled for 7–23 February 2014, opening rounds in figure skating, skiing, and snowboard competitions were held on the eve of theOpening Ceremony, 6 February 2014. Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC). Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the USSR in 1991. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics inMoscow.

The spectacular opening ceremony of the ongoing Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia happened 12MN yesterday, February 7, with live satellite broadcast over TV5.

After a 22-year absence, the Philippines will be represented by figure skater Michael Christian Martinez from Muntinlupa. The 17-year old Michael is the first homegrown Filipino figure skater competing in The Winter Olympics. Initially, he did not expect to qualify in this year’s Olympic Games but he and his mother took the risk of competing this year. He is looking to qualify and finish in the top 24 in the oldest sport in The Winter Olympics.
