Based on the results, CAAP, the regulatory body with jurisdiction over the entire civil aviation system of the Philippines, has improved its effective implementation (EI) with current overall results of 69.68%, which is above the world average of 64.85%. This means the country complies with international safety standards.

AVIATION & AIRPORTS SECTOR UPDATE #4

AUTOMATIC DEPENDENT SURVEILLANCE BROADCAST NOW OPERATIONAL IN PALAWAN

The Department of Transportation (DOTr), through the leadership of Secretary Arthur P. Tugade, and the Singapore government, represented by Singapore’s Ambassador to the Philippines Kok Li Peng, inaugurated the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) in the municipality of Bataraza in the southernmost tip of Palawan on 2 December 2017.

The ADS-B project-- a state-of- the-art surveillance technology that aims to make flights safer and air traffic management more efficient-- is a collaboration between the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).

The ADS-B technology allows an aircraft to determine its position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcasts it, enabling it to be tracked. An aircraft equipped with ADS-B can broadcast useful information such as their identities, positions, altitudes, and velocities twice every second.

By 2018, the DOTr, through CAAP, shall likewise establish ADS-B ground stations in the Kalayaan Group of Islands. In 2019, additional ADS-B ground stations in Iba, Zambales and Bolinao, Pangasinan.
