U-16 cagers eye FIBA appearance

The Energen Pilipinas U-16 team leaves Saturday for Nha Trang, Vietnam, determined to gatecrash the party of the top guns in the FIBA Asia U-16 Championship slated Oct. 18-28.

Coached by former San Miguel Beer star Olsen Racela, the National cagers will take a two-hour flight to the capital of Ho Chi Minh City before taking a short flight to the site, a scenic coastal city.

Racela's team, however, will have to wait for three days before seeing action in the biennial cagefest that gives the champion team a berth in next year's FIBA World U-17 Championship in Kaunas, Lithuania.

The opening of the 11-day event begins on the 18th but the PH cagers will debut on the following day when they battle Indonesia, a team they handily beat in the SEABA U-16 tilt held last August in Banting City, Malaysia.

After Indonesia, they will face the Vietnamese on Thursday to close out their three-nation Group D campaign. The top three teams in each group will advance to the second round.

Though the PH cagers are already assured of advancing to the next round, they are sure to encounter rough sailing in the second round since they will be up against top three teams in Group C that is compose of Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

The U-16 squad is composed of Henry Asilum (Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu), Hubert Cani (National University), Rev Diputado (San Beda), Kyles Lao (Xavier), Jay Javelosa (Reedley), Earl Murphy (Ateneo) and Daryl Pascual (Arellano).

Others include Malayan High School of Science star J-Jay Alejandro, Nic Dalafu of Victory Christian International School, Andrei Caracut of San Beda, Jordan Heading of Morrison Academy, Tomas Ramos of Ateneo, Prince Rivero of NU and Isaac Go of Xavier.
