Elderly Filipino Week on October 1-7

Elderly Filipino Week  will be celebrated on October 1-7. It's a good reminder for the young generations to pay respect to our elderly citizens.

A September 27, 2012, press release from the Department of Social Welfare and Development

The Department of Social Welfare and Development, other government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs) and senior citizens’ associations will lead the Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) celebration on October 1-7, 2012.

The EFW celebration is pursuant to Proclamation No. 470 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos on September 26, 1994. The event aims to increase public awareness on the different issues concerning the older persons’ sector.

This year’s EFW theme “Nakatatanda: Sa Bisa ng RA 9994, May Dangal, Nagkakaisa, Buhay ay Gumiginhawa,” focuses on the contributions of Expanded Senior Citizens Act 2010 to the improvement of lives of older persons.

According to Secretary of Social Welfare and Development Dinky Soliman, a concrete example of the benefits being enjoyed by older persons aside from the discounts on the purchase of medicines and selected grocery items is the Social Pension Program.

Under RA 9994, indigent senior citizens are entitled to a social pension amounting to P500 monthly.

“The provision of monthly cash assistance to indigent senior citizens has given them immense comfort knowing there is a pension they can count on during their twilight years. It has also alleviated the financial and economic burdens of their families since the amount helps them buy the basic needs of their elderly members,” Secretary Soliman explained.

Drumbeating the EFW celebration is the “Walk for Life” at the SM Mall of Asia. More than 2,000 participants from the 17 Metro Manila chapters of the Federation of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines (FSCAP) and members of the National Steering Committee chaired by the DSWD will join the ‘Walk for Life’ spearheaded by the Department of Health (DOH) to promote health and wellness of older persons.

Other activities for EFW include: intergenerational concert on October 3 at SM Fairview, Kimona ni Lola fashion show on October 5 at SM Manila, Policy/Aging Forum on October 4, Dalaw Kalinga and soft launch of the Golden Reception and Action Center for the Elderly and Other Special Cases (GRACES) on October 6; and the Sampung Ulirang Nakatatanda Awards on October 7.

In addition, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and the Social Security System (SSS) will hold the Pensioners Day during the week.

Other participating agencies and NGOs are: the Departments of Trade and Industry, Education, Finance, Interior and Local Government, and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA); Coalition of Services for the Elderly (COSE), Coalition of Senior Citizens Associations of the Philippines (COSCAP), Philippine United Senior Citizens Association (PUSCA), SM Supermalls and Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) of the 17 cities and municipalities of NCR.
